For more than half a century, Haskel Lookstein has served the Jewish community as a rabbi, scholar, educator, and communal leader.

Following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, Rabbi Moses Z. Margolies, and his father, Rabbi Joseph H. Lookstein, he has significantly expanded the reach and impact of Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun, one of the most important synagogues not only in New York City but in the entire American Jewish community. Continuing and building on the work of his late father, who founded the Ramaz School, Rabbi Lookstein has guided the growth of Ramaz as it has emerged as one of the premiere educational institutions in the Jewish world.

Rabbi Lookstein has been a passionate voice for moderation and tolerance in the Jewish world, an unrelenting ad vocate for Jewish women’s concerns, and a tireless activist for the liberation of Soviet Jewry and the defense of Israel. Above all, he is a man who has devoted his life to the principle of doing chesed, acts of lovingkindness, for those near and far.

Through his innumerable achievements, the institutions he has helped build and lead, and the countless people whose lives he has profoundly influenced, Rabbi Lookstein has left his indelible imprint on our generation and on generations to come. In these two volumes, more than forty of today’s most prominent Torah scholars, Jewish historians, and political scientists, all of them either former students or close colleagues of Rabbi Lookstein, come together to honor their teacher, mentor and colleague with original essays on Jewish law, history, and culture. Rav Chesed also includes a biographical essay that explores his life and impact, and places the Lookstein story in the context of modern American Jewish history. Haskel Lookstein has set a standard for Jewish leadership to which many will aspire but few will reach. Rav Chesed pays tribute to this extraordinary man and explores his legacy.
