- the human mind is not equipped to tackle this problemReview by Booklist
- The central theme of the late Rabbi Soloveitchik's theological examination of the Holocaust and the rise of the State of Israel he states this way: "The imperative to transform our existence from a causally determined, purely natural existence (fate) into an active, meaningful one suffused with a sense of purpose (destiny)." He posits that it is senseless to raise the metaphysical question of why there is evil in the world, adding that the human mind is not equipped to tackle this problem. Instead of looking for an explanation of our fate, he believes that we should ask ourselves how we can respond to evil in a manner that will enable us to emerge from this experience as better moral and spiritual beings. Fate and Destiny, originally published in Hebrew, is highly relevant and will be of interest to Jews and non-Jews alike. (Posted on 5/7/2015)
- Extended, informative, insightful, inspiring theological meditation on the Holocaust and the rise of the State of IsraelReview by Midwest Book Review
- In Fate And Destiny: From The Holocaust To The State Of Israel, Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik presents an extended, informative, insightful, inspiring theological meditation on the Holocaust and the rise of the State of Israel; a profound examination of the Jewish "covenant of faith"; and the "covenant of fate and destiny" which links all Jews, whether they be religious, irreligious, or non-religious. This covenant of faith manifests itself in shared circumstances, shared responsibility, and shared activity. Fate is thrust upon the Jews, while destiny is freely chose by the individual Jew and the Jewish people by adopting a Torah lifestyle thereby possessing both significance and purpose. Fate And Destiny is an impressive presentation and a highly recommended addition to Judaic Studies reading lists and library collections. (Posted on 5/7/2015)
